'Bobby's Story'
My 2006 novel for children and teens, Bobby's Story, is a story of teen courage and the power inside each of us. The book is based on unpleasant events that occurred many years ago in my own life.
The character, Bobby, is constantly reminded of his grandfather's powerful words of life, "Wrong is wrong - no matter how many people do it, and that it only takes one person to speak out for what is right - The Power of One!"
After Bobby's parents lose everything - their jobs, their home, and their dreams - his family is forced to leave all their family and friends behind. They move to the city with hopes of finding jobs and starting over.
For Bobby, the struggle is about acceptance, not only from his new friends, but his new life. He must reach inside himself to find the inner strength necessary to make new friends, live in poverty, and stand up to the red-haired bully.
Bobby's Story is as relevant today, as it was so many years ago!

REVIEW:     I am constantly looking for ways to teach children the anti-bully message. Nothing seems to do the job better than a story with characters the children relate to and understand. Bobby's Story has proven to be such a tool. Themes and specific phrases from the story have become "culture" in my classroom. I only need to refer to the story or a particular character to make a point and my students understand. In my classroom we use "circle time" to deal with any issues our class encounters. For the past two years I have been able to refer to the concepts the children learned from while we are problem solving interpersonal conflicts. As a teacher, I am grateful to have such a valuable tool for teaching children how to deal with bullies. The story not only helps to teach how to deal with bullies, but also brings conversation and better understanding of why bullies do what they do. - Carol, National Board Certified Teacher

REVIEW:     As a clinical psychologist, I work with children and their parents to address the emotional aftermath of bullying in the schools and community. This book is a wonderful resource for parents, children and professionals who are trying to use positive coping skills to address an increasingly predatory childhood culture. This book offers hope where children and their parents have only felt unheard and powerless. The message of Bobby's Story is timely. I now include it on the reading list for my anti-bullying and parenting seminars, because it offers a solution for the problem of bullying at its source and helps to empower those who have been abused. It teaches that bullying can be resolved without violence and without hatred. - Cheryl, PhD, Psychologist
